Protein skimmer
A flotation unit (also known as a skimmer, protein skimmer or foam separation column) is a piece of equipment for the physico-chemical treatment of water, used in intensive aquaculture (particularly in marine recirculating aquaculture systems, shrimp farming systems, sturgeon farming and closed-loop hatcheries). The technology is based on the principle of flotation: the removal of dissolved organic compounds (proteins, amino acids, feed residues) from the water before they decompose into toxic ammonium and nitrites.
What it is
- —For effective foam separation, the system must operate within specific hydrodynamic parameters: Contact Time: To allow organic matter to attach to the air bubbles, the water retention time inside the column must be between 1 and 2 minutes. This determines the height and volume of the flotation unit. Water Flow Rate: This is calculated individually for each biomass type. On average, the flotation unit should pass through it between 1 and 3 full volumes of the tank per hour. Air-to-Water Ratio: The optimum balance for industrial skimmers is between 1:2 and 1:1. In other words, for every cubic metre of water pumped through, the pump must supply between 500 and 1,000 litres of air. Effect of water salinity: The technology operates at 100 per cent of its efficiency in seawater (salinity of 15 per mille and above), as the high density and surface tension of salt water allow the creation of ultra-fine bubbles that do not coalesce. In fresh water, flotation efficiency drops by 60–70 per cent, so freshwater flotation units require the installation of more powerful air generators or ozone generation systems.
