What it is

• —A SAMP (from the English ‘sump’ – a technical reservoir or settling tank) is an open, multi-compartment tank connected to the main basin or aquarium via the principle of communicating vessels. Water flows by gravity from the working tank into the SAMP via an overflow system, undergoes successive stages of purification, and is then returned by a lift pump. The main advantage of this technology is that all equipment (heaters, sensors, biological media, skimmers) is located outside the main tank, and the total volume of water in the system is significantly increased, which enhances its biological stability. System components and zoning A classic SAMP is divided by partitions into several sequential compartments, each of which performs its own technical function: Mechanical filtration compartment: The first point of water intake. Filter socks (bags), sponge mats of varying densities or synthetic wadding are installed here. The purpose of this zone is to trap large suspended particles, feed residues and excrement from aquatic organisms before they begin to decompose. Chemical and special treatment zone (flotation unit/skimmer): In marine or intensive freshwater systems, a skimmer is fitted here to remove dissolved organic matter and proteins. Absorbents (activated carbon, zeolite, ion-exchange resins) are also placed in this zone. Biological filtration compartment (biofilter): The largest zone in terms of volume. It is filled with porous substrates with a high specific surface area (ceramic rings, sintered porous glass material, plastic bio-balls or lava rock). Colonies of nitrifying bacteria develop here, which oxidise toxic ammonium to nitrites and then to relatively safe nitrates. Return chamber: The final chamber, where a submersible pump is installed to return the treated water. Heaters, automatic fresh water top-up systems (to compensate for evaporation) and sensors for monitoring parameters are also located here.
