What it is

• —The operating principle of the irrigated biofilter differs significantly from conventional designs, in which the biofilter media is entirely immersed in the aquatic environment. In this design, water is fed into the upper part of the housing and distributed evenly across the entire filter area. It then passes through a system of orifices and structural elements, breaking up into a large number of fine droplets. It is in this form that the water irrigates the bio-media, gradually seeping through the lower tiers of the filter. The consistent irrigation of the biofilter media is just as effective as the traditional method of keeping the biofilm carrier suspended in the water column. Nitrifying bacteria have constant access to nutrients and oxygen, creating optimal conditions for the conversion of ammonium and nitrites into less toxic compounds. At the same time, the design itself ensures uniform contact between the water and the entire surface area of the biofilter media, which has a positive effect on the stability of biological processes even under varying system loads.
