Fish feeding technology

Fish feeding technology in aquaculture is based on providing fish with a balanced diet appropriate to their age, species and physiological needs. Modern farms utilise both the natural food resources of water bodies and specialised compound feeds, which help to increase growth rates and fish productivity. A rational feeding system promotes the efficient use of feed, improves the quality of the aquatic environment and enhances the economic efficiency of fish farming.

What it is

Feeding
  • —System productivity: Depending on the type of farm and the intensity of cultivation, the technology ensures yields ranging from 5–10 t/ha in pond farms to 50–120 kg/m³ in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Recommended scale of application: The technology is used in pond, tank, cage and recirculating aquaculture systems for the rearing of cyprinids, sturgeons, salmonids and other fish species. Operating temperature range: * cyprinids: 18–28 °C
  • —* sturgeons: 16–24 °C
  • —* salmonids: 10–18 °C. Operating water parameters: * pH: 6.8–8.0
  • —* dissolved oxygen: not less than 5–7 mg/l
  • —* ammonium (NH₄): up to 0.5 mg/l
  • —* nitrites (NO₂): up to 0.1 mg/l
  • —* nitrates (NO₃): up to 50 mg/l
  • —* salinity: in accordance with the species’ biological requirements. Water requirements: In pond systems — depends on the surface area of the pond and water exchange
  • —in RAS — 5–10 per cent water replacement per day of the total system volume. Energy consumption: In intensive systems — approximately 3–8 kW/h per 1 t of produce, depending on the level of automation and type of equipment. Recommended stocking density: * pond farming: 1–5 t/ha
  • —* tank systems: 20–60 kg/m³
  • —* RAS: up to 80–120 kg/m³. Main system components: * automatic or mechanical feeders
  • —* feed dosing systems
  • —* mechanical and biological filters
  • —* aeration units
  • —* pumping equipment
  • —* water quality control and feeding monitoring systems. Other important characteristics: The technology involves the use of high-protein pelletised or extruded feeds with a high digestibility rate, the automation of feeding processes, and continuous monitoring of the feed conversion ratio (FCR), which, with modern technologies, ranges from 0.9–1.8 depending on the fish species.

Where it runs

Examples of the use of fish feeding technology in aquaculture * the rearing of carp, silver carp and grass carp in pond farms using compound feed and natural feed sources; * intensive farming of sturgeon in tank and recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) with automated feed delivery; * rearing of salmonid species in flow-through and cage systems using high-protein extruded feeds; * rearing of juvenile fish for stocking natural water bodies; * the use of automatic feeders in commercial fish farms to reduce feed costs; * rearing tilapia and African catfish in intensive warm-water aquaculture systems; * the use of programmable feeding systems in marine aquaculture for rearing mullet and other euryhaline fish species; * the combined use of water monitoring systems and automated feeding to improve farm productivity.
